What We Believe

What We Believe

Welcome to the Churches of Christ!

We here at Newland Street Chruch of Christ believe in a “speak where the Bible speaks, stay silent where the Bible is silent” approach to the Gospel. You might say we do things “by the Book” as it were. So what does this mean? In short, it basically means that if there is clear scriptural evidence against something, we don’t do it, the reverse is also true. It also means that if we don’t have clear scriptural evidence for or against something then we cannot speak out against it or for it on a salvational level.

The primary example of this would be what the Bible says about salvation. In Acts 2:38 the Apostle Peter says: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the Holy Spirit”. There are many other examples of baptism being necessary for salvation (Mark 16:16, Acts 22:16, and 1 Peter 3:21 to cite a few.) Therefore, we believe that baptism is an essential part of salvation. We believe that baptism brings on salvation rather than being a sign of it or something you do later on.

Other Facts About Us:

  • We are a non-denominational church. This means that the Churches of Christ are all autonomous having no central clergy or hierarchy. We are individual churches with individual elderships. What this means is that every Church of Christ might be a little different in some ways. We all, however, abide by the same basic beliefs.
  • We here at Newland Street are an acapella church. This means that we do not use musical instruments in our services. We do this because we like to model ourselves after the 1st century Christian practices. We know that the 1st century Christians didn’t use instruments in their worship. In fact, the organ didn’t start being used until the 10th-12th centuries.
  • At Newland, we strive to be a kind, loving family. We welcome everyone to come and join us in worshiping the Lord.
